What did you do before joining Barratt Developments?

Before I started on the programme, I had just completed my HNC qualification in Construction Project Management at university.

What led you to the housebuilding industry and Barratt Developments?

I always had a passion for construction, which is why I chose to do a construction-related course at college and university. Whilst looking for jobs I came across the Barratt Developments Degree Programme which I felt was the ideal mix of academia and real-life experience I hadn’t found anywhere else.

What is the best thing about your job?

I love being able to work alongside subcontractors and senior members of staff. The exposure to other sections of the construction industry is brilliant as you’re in constant communication with other colleagues such as Site Managers, Project Managers, Contracts Managers, and Directors. My favourite part of the job, however, is seeing happy clients move into their dream home which is a direct consequence of everyone working together.

Why did you choose to do the Degree Apprenticeship?

The Degree Apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to work on a live site and gain experience while also studying for a highly regarded qualification.

What advice would you give to someone applying for this programme?

If you manage your time, there are so many on-site opportunities to make the most of. You’ll be working alongside professionals with a wealth of knowledge and you should be looking to learn as much as you can from them. Don’t be afraid to speak to people within the company, as everyone is there to help and more than willing to spend time with you, use all of your resources!

What did you do before joining Barratt Developments?

Before I started on the programme, I had already been working for Barratt Developments for around a year and half. I had completed the Accelerated Construction/Barratt Developments academy programme and then went on to achieve my NVQ level 4 soon after.

What led you to the housebuilding industry and Barratt Developments?

Having been a qualified carpenter for over 10 years, along with time spent in the Army as a medic, I felt I knew enough about construction and management to give the Trainee Assistant Site Management programme a chance. Barratt Developments is the nation’s largest housebuilder, and with their fantastic reputation, I knew if I was going to learn the role then Barratt Developments would be the right place to be.

What is the best thing about your job?

In my current role as an Assistant Site Manager, I really enjoy the day to day running of the site, whether that’s making sure health and safety protocols are being followed, having meetings with contractors or running through site progress. No day is the same on site and you never know what’s going to come through the door.

Why did you choose to do the Degree Apprenticeship?

After I had completed the Barratt Developments academy programme, I wanted to keep learning and when the opportunity arose to do the Degree Apprenticeship, I had to take it. It’s been a great experience. I’m still learning new skills and discovering more about the industry. I’ve been speaking with other degree students and we’re all enjoying the benefits of the on and off site training.

What advice would you give to someone applying for this programme?

Make sure you’re ready to commit, be proactive in your role while on site to allow maximum time to study and research. The more you put in, the more you get out.

Martha Assistant Quantity Surveyor Expand/Collapse Martha Accordion

Briefly describe your background prior to starting the programme.

Prior to starting the programme, I had graduated with a First Class Honours in Criminology and Psychology from Liverpool John Moores and went on to serve as a front line Police Officer.

What led you to the housebuilding industry and Barratt Developments?

Despite my previous experience, the housebuilding industry was an interest of mine because of its ever-changing and fast-moving nature, meaning no day is the same and the future looks exciting. I was drawn to Barratt Developments because of their values and their desire to support everyone who works for them, as well as delivering the very best for their customers and stakeholders.

What is the best thing about your job?

I am constantly learning and pushing myself, while being supported by an incredible network of people in the office, out on site and at university. On a day to day basis I’m helping out the Surveyors in the office, and my long term ambition is to take on the responsibility of running a site of my own.

Why did you choose to do a Degree Apprenticeship?

A Degree Apprenticeship was the perfect option for me. I wanted a full-time career while continuing to learn and working towards an extra qualification. This route offers me on-the-job experience, a career and a degree. It really ticked all of the boxes that I was looking for.

What advice would you give to someone applying for this programme?

Just go for it. Barratt Developments will support you all the way, you’ll always feel that you are a valued member of the team, and that your aspirations are respected and supported.
